Putting Down Roots

I could listen all day

Lilly had told us about how the toy store sold good homemade ice cream, so we stopped in there on the way back from planting about 50 broccoli plants with a woman (broccoli was apparently all she ever wanted to eat.) I just about fell in love with the guy who served us. He was tall and lanky and the most endearing sort of geek. He gave us about 6 tastes each, starting with us each requesting a flavor, and continuing with him taking us down the line, giving us a tour of his favorites (the kicker being that he’s lactose intolerant). He knew the story behind the caramel sauce, and how sundaes became a thing, and how soda fountains used to work, and pretty much everything you need to know about anything connected with ice cream. He was brilliant.

And then tonight we went to a poetry reading (slam-type stuff, but not a slam, because folks were just sharing, not getting judged), where we got to be the only white kids in the room (until a couple of hipsters showed up and sat right next to us). Oh man oh man, listening to those folks rhyme was something else.

A day full of folks speaking something wonderful into the air around us, using their voices to say what’s important to them. A good, good day to have ears.
